Birdwatching

Group Description :
We meet at locations which vary through the seasons depending on what wildlife is about. Whilst most of the sites we visit are fairly close to Peterborough, we do visit a few more distant sites up to about 35 miles away. Walks are sedate ambles at "birdwatching pace", none are particularly strenuous. Suitable clothing and footwear is essential for conditions on the day. You will need a pair of binoculars and a telescope will be useful at some of the larger sites. We are an informal, sociable group and beginners are welcome as well as experienced birders. Whilst we are mainly a birdwatching group, there are opportunities to see all other forms of flora and fauna.

Wednesday 1st July, Maxey area

Meet at 10:30am on Wednesday 1st July on Main Road, Etton, just north of the village and by the bridge over South Drain where there are obvious parking places on either side of the road (TF140067). This is about 7 miles from Peterborough. Get there by taking the A15 heading north from the Glinton roundabout and then turning left at the next roundabout on the B1443 towards Helpston. After about 400yards, take the first right towards Etton, proceed through the village and look for the parking place shortly after passing the church and leaving the village.

We will walk around the Etton-Maxey area, viewing a couple of of the gravel pits, Maxey Cut and also a couple of the Langdyke Countryside Trust reserves aiming to return to the parking spot around 12:30. This involves field paths which are currently flat and dry, but somewhat uneven underfoot in some places. There are no facilities on the site.

We can expect to see terns, gulls, waders and wildfowl on the pits and a good variety of field and hedgerow birds. The area is noted for Yellowhammer and Linnet and there is the possibility of Turtle Dove and a variety of birds of prey including Hobby and Marsh Harrier.
