The visit to Derby organised by the Art History Group, but is open all members, will give us an opportunity to visit two museums.
The Derby Museum and Art Gallery Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of works by Joseph Wright of Derby.
Born in Derby in 1734, Wright is an internationally renowned artist, whose paintings and works on paper adorn the walls of major galleries the world over. Famed as a “painter of light” and for his association with key members of the intellectual movement known as the Enlightenment, he is now considered to be one of Britain’s most interesting and wide-ranging painters..
The Museum of Making.
Derby Silk Mill, formerly known as Derby Industrial Museum, is a museum of industry and history in Derby, England. The museum is located on the former site of Lombe's Mill, a historic silk mill which marks the southern end of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The site opened as Derby’s Industrial Museum, on 29 November 1974. A £17 million redevelopment scheme started in 2016, and the museum reopened under the new name of the Museum of Making on 21 May 2021.
The party will be split into two groups, one having a guided tour of the Art Gallery and the other the Museum of Making in the morning. In the afternoon the groups will swop over.
The galleries are approx. 1/3 mile apart and both have cafes. Derby Cathedral an 18th Century Church /Cathedral is on the route between the two galleries and well worth a visit.
